Why study Theatre?

Meet our passionate theatre academics and learn about the opportunities you'll have here at СÀ¶ÊÓƵ.

Dr Pheobe Rumsey: I'm sitting here in the beautiful new Theatre Royal where we are filming some of our level six students major academic projects.

This is part of an expansive program here at the University that explores performance in all its forms whether it's musical theatre drama or production.

We as your lecturers are here to shape your path encourage you and to find those opportunities where you can really explore what's passionate to you, so that your time here is quite exciting but also we're setting you up for a life in the Arts and as a creative person, so that you can start exploring those very key things to you whether it's your own culture or community and how that can manifest itself on stage.

Dr Ben Macpherson: So we have a really rich and long established history of teaching musical theatre here, so our musical theatre pathway in part extends back around 20 years in terms of how we teach and learn about musical theatre in this department.

And the really important thing and and fascinating thing with our team is that we're both international but also internationally recognised both in our research work but also as practitioners, so when you come and learn with us you're not just going to be learning from people who think about musical theatre but also have acted, danced, choreographed, composed, worked on creating or directing shows.

And part of that therefore is that we bring both of those things to the table, so you'll think about practice but then you'll actually learn through doing as well.

Dr Nik Wakefield: So a typical week in the life of a first year student here at the СÀ¶ÊÓƵ is a mix of kind of practical work and theoretical work.

There's lectures for critical analysis and studying performance histories but there's also practical modules where you're getting on your feet in the studio where you're working on a monologue or a song learn about how to get your body to be a really expressive instrument on stage.

There's plenty of time for you to balance out your coursework with independent rehearsal time, time reading in the library, time spent working with your groups in our studios.

Sometimes you're on this very stage, at other times you're working in small intimate studios so after that kind of practical work in movement and voice you might take that into your devised project where you're creating an original new piece of work, collaborating with other students and make the kind of work that you want to make, that we can use our experience as staff our professional experience and our academic expertise to facilitate you being able to express yourself and communicate your ideas to the world in the ways that you want to.
